Chapter 21

I make sure I have my cell phone near me from the moment I arrive back home. I don’t want to misplace it and miss Liam’s call when he arrives in California.

Surprisingly, the burner cell rings a couple of hours later.

“Hi, Liam.”

“Hey, baby. I just wanted to call before I boarded the flight.”

“Thank you, sweetie. I didn’t expect it, but I’m so glad to hear from you. I’ve been a mess since you left. I feel so lost. I don’t know what to do.”

“Aw, my girl. I hate being away from you, too.”

“I already miss you like crazy, especially since I don’t know when I’ll see you again.”

“I know, angel. I promise I’ll do my best to not make it too long. I miss you already, too. I’m sorry, I have to go. I’ve got to board now. I’ll call you later when I get there, alright?”

“Alright. Talk to you then. I love you, Liam.”

“I love you, Marcy.”

It was great hearing from him. I hadn’t expected it. I can’t believe I ever doubted his love for me. He was right about not being able to pretend to love me. I can’t believe I was that paranoid. There’s definitely still something wrong with me. Maybe this is an excellent time to sit quietly and try to figure out my problem.

A short while after I hang up from speaking with Liam, I decide I should eat dinner. I’ve got to get out of the habit of not eating when I’m alone. It’s not a healthy lifestyle. I go to the refrigerator and see the take out that Liam had gotten Saturday. It reminds me of how I was late returning from the café, and now I’m regretting it. I could’ve had that extra time with him. Why do we always waste the moments we desire the most?

I heat up the leftover food. It’s good but not as good as when I was sharing it with Liam. I start to cry again.

Jeez, Marcy, you really have to toughen up. You’re so emotional these days. I don’t remember crying so much in the last eight years as I have during the previous five months. I’ve got to get my life together.

After dinner, I feel like having a dessert of some kind. Go figure, a woman who owns a bakery, and I don’t have any bakery items at home. I drive to the café to pick up a dessert. I pass The Lucky Tavern on my way and see Sue-Ellen getting out of her car.

“Hi, SE. How’s it going?”

“Hey, Marcy, where you going?”

“To the café.”

“Is there a problem?”

“No, I’m craving some goodies, and I don’t have anything at home.”

She laughs. “I know what you mean. Sometimes, I really need something sweet or some chocolate, and I’ll do almost anything to get it.”

I giggle. “I understand, a girl after my own heart. How was business yesterday?”

“Good, Marcy. We were swamped all day. Since it was such a beautiful day, many people were out walking and enjoying the nice weather.
